EU Funding

European Defence Fund 2026: ~€1B round closes 29 September

The EDF 2026 work programme (€1.006B across 31 topics in 10 calls) closed 27 of its topics on 29 September 2026. The 2027 work programme is next.

Our take: If you missed this round, start building consortia now. EDF rewards SMEs that join cross-border teams early.
EU Funding

EIC Accelerator opens to dual-use, next cut-off 4 November

The Accelerator now runs six cut-offs a year. Since July 2026, dual-use applications are eligible, with equity of up to €30M, plus a new €100M EIC STEP Defence Scale Up call.

Our take: This changes things for robotics and drone founders who previously had to hide their defence use cases.
EU Funding

ESA BIC Czech Republic: autumn intake

ESA BIC Prague and Brno offer up to 2 years of incubation with €50k non-equity funding and technical mentoring. Applications are always open, and the next evaluation deadline is this autumn.

Our take: This is the cheapest capital available to a Czech space startup, and it's a strong signal to later investors.
Research

IROS 2026 is live in Pittsburgh (27 Sep – 1 Oct)

IEEE/RSJ IROS, the flagship intelligent robots conference, is running this week, with humanoid whole-body control among the most watched topics.

Our take: Watch for award finalists from European labs, since that's where the next spin-offs come from.
Research

CoRL 2026 accepted papers ahead of Austin (9–12 Nov)

The Conference on Robot Learning has announced acceptances. Camera-ready papers are due 12 October, and the conference runs 9–11 November with workshops on 12 November.

Our take: Robot learning is where foundation models meet hardware. We're tracking European author teams.
Funding Rounds

TEKEVER raises $580M Series D at $6.4B valuation

The Portuguese-British AI drone maker closed the first tranche, led by UC Investments and Baillie Gifford, after winning the UK's CORVUS programme (up to £400M).

Our take: A European dual-use drone company is now a decacorn candidate. Defence autonomy is no longer niche.
Funding Rounds

Open Cosmos raises €300M and becomes Europe's newest space unicorn

The Oxford-based satellite company's round was led by Lightrock. It will expand manufacturing in the UK, Spain, Portugal and Greece for its EO and secure-comms constellations.

Our take: Sovereign space infrastructure is now fundable at scale in Europe.
Funding Rounds

DTCP hits €455M first close for its debut defence fund

The NATO-aligned fund, targeting €500M, backs Series B+ companies in AI, autonomy, cyber, secure comms and space, with €10–30M tickets. Investors include Deutsche Telekom and Porsche SE.

Our take: More growth capital for defence tech means a clearer path for today's pre-seed companies.
Funding Rounds

Laser counter-drone: INLEAP Photonics (€20M) and Ground A (€9.1M)

Hanover's INLEAP raised a €20M seed led by UVC Partners. Ground A, founded only in January 2026, raised a €9.1M pre-seed led by Vsquared with Quantum Systems for its GA 1000 system.

Our take: Counter-UAS is the hottest early-stage defence category in Europe right now.
Funding Rounds

iGii secures £22.7M to scale 3D graphene foam

The Scottish materials company raised an £11.7M Series B led by the Scottish National Investment Bank, plus £11M from Scottish Enterprise, to move its Gii material into production.

Our take: Advanced materials is a reminder that deep tech isn't only AI and drones.
Czech

IP Lab Ventures Fund I: first Czech tech-transfer fund (€50M+)

The EIF commits ~€27M from the National Recovery Plan to a pre-seed/seed fund that commercialises university IP in AI, robotics, autonomy, semiconductors and more.

Our take: Czech university spin-offs finally have a dedicated first cheque, which makes co-investment opportunities likely.
Czech

TA ČR: THÉTA 2 open until 21 October, TREND postponed

The 4th THÉTA 2 call (energy R&D, CZK 1.17B) runs until 21 October 2026. The 13th TREND call is postponed, and TREND subprogramme 2 won't open in 2026.

Our take: Industrial R&D teams relying on TREND should look at EIC and EDF instead this year.
