EDF 2027: the last call round of this EU budget, so start your consortium now
2027 is the final annual European Defence Fund work programme of the 2021–2027 budget. The Commission's indicative 2026–2027 perspective already lists the candidate topics. About 20% of each work programme goes to EUDIS measures for SMEs and start-ups, including non-thematic calls on disruptive technologies. Space is set to get more than 10% of the EDF budget.
Our take: The topics are public before the calls open. Robotics, AI and space founders should pick a topic and line up cross-border partners this autumn, not after the 2027 calls are published.

EIC Accelerator: last 2026 cut-off on 4 November
⏰ Full proposals due: 4 Nov 2026
4 November 2026 (17:00 Brussels) is the final full-proposal cut-off of the year. Full proposals require an approved Step 1 short proposal, which takes 4 to 6 weeks to evaluate. Dual-use applications are eligible since July 2026.
Our take: Teams with an approved Step 1 should submit now. Everyone else should file Step 1 this month and target the first 2027 cut-offs.

Horizon Europe: €18M AI-driven robotics for industry call opens 17 November
⏰ Call opens: 17 Nov 2026
Cluster 4 topic HORIZON-CL4-2027-04-DIGITAL-EMERGING-05 (Apply AI, Innovation Action) funds one project of about €18M on integrating AI-driven robotics into industry. It opens 17 November 2026 and closes 18 March 2027, alongside a €44M EU Frontier AI topic.
Our take: It's a single large consortium grant, so robotics start-ups win by joining a strong integrator-led bid early, not by applying alone.

IAC 2026 opens in Antalya (5–9 October)
The International Astronautical Congress, the largest annual space conference with more than 6,000 participants, runs this week in Antalya under the theme 'The World Needs More Space'. Plenaries cover large-constellation safety and in-orbit research.
Our take: IAC is where agencies signal next year's procurement priorities. We're listening for ESA and EU sovereign-space announcements.

CoRL 2026 accepted papers ahead of Austin (9–12 Nov)
The Conference on Robot Learning has announced acceptances. Camera-ready papers are due 12 October, and the conference runs 9–11 November with workshops on 12 November.
Our take: Robot learning is where foundation models meet hardware. We're tracking European author teams.
Funding Rounds
European defence tech hits a record $7.4B in 2026
A Dealroom and Resilience Media report shows European defence tech VC nearly tripling from $2.6B in 2025. Seven $1B+ rounds make up over 85% of the total, drones took $4.7B and counter-drone $1.2B, and breakout rounds ($15–100M) have doubled.
Our take: The money is concentrated at the top. Early-stage is flat, which is exactly where disciplined seed investors can still get good entry prices.
Funding Rounds
Foundational raises £8.2M pre-seed for laser satellite positioning
The London start-up, founded in 2025, automates satellite laser ranging with retroreflectors and ground stations for millimetre-level orbit data. Investors include Inflection, BACKED, Final Frontier, Adjacent and Type One Ventures.
Our take: Space situational awareness is becoming core infrastructure, and pre-seed rounds this size show how hot it has become.
Funding Rounds
Final Frontier and Myriad merge into a €100M early-stage defence fund
Two Danish defence-tech VCs combined under the Final Frontier brand to raise the €100M Final Frontier Fund II. It will back pre-seed and seed defence start-ups in the Nordics and Ukraine, with a first close expected by the end of 2026.
Our take: Small early-stage defence funds are consolidating to write bigger cheques, which is good news for co-investment syndicates.

Headline closes $400M Headline EU VIII for seed and Series A
Headline, an early backer of Mistral and Black Forest Labs, closed a $400M fund for European seed and Series A companies with a primary focus on AI.
Our take: Follow-on capital for European AI is deepening, which lowers the financing risk for companies we back at pre-seed.
Funding Rounds
DTCP hits €455M first close for its debut defence fund
The NATO-aligned fund, targeting €500M, backs Series B+ companies in AI, autonomy, cyber, secure comms and space, with €10–30M tickets. Investors include Deutsche Telekom and Porsche SE.
Our take: More growth capital for defence tech means a clearer path for today's pre-seed companies.
Funding Rounds
TEKEVER raises $580M Series D at $6.4B valuation
The Portuguese-British AI drone maker closed the first tranche, led by UC Investments and Baillie Gifford, after winning the UK's CORVUS programme (up to £400M).
Our take: A European dual-use drone company is now a decacorn candidate. Defence autonomy is no longer niche.
Czech
Czech Space Week 2026: 2–8 November in Prague and Brno
⏰ Starts: 2 Nov 2026
CzechInvest, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Planetum Praha run a week of events including Space2Business (3–4 November), LaunchIT: NextGen Space Founders, Space x AI Connect and an ESA BIC Launchpad evening on 5 November.
Our take: This is the best week of the year to meet Czech space founders in one place.
Czech
IP Lab Ventures Fund I: first Czech tech-transfer fund (€50M+)
The EIF commits ~€27M from the National Recovery Plan to a pre-seed/seed fund that commercialises university IP in AI, robotics, autonomy, semiconductors and more.
Our take: Czech university spin-offs finally have a dedicated first cheque, which makes co-investment opportunities likely.

TA ČR: THÉTA 2 open until 21 October, TREND postponed
⏰ Call closes: 21 Oct 2026
The 4th THÉTA 2 call (energy R&D, CZK 1.17B) runs until 21 October 2026. The 13th TREND call is postponed, and TREND subprogramme 2 won't open in 2026.
Our take: Industrial R&D teams relying on TREND should look at EIC and EDF instead this year.
