EU Funding

EIC STEP Scale Up Defence: €100M equity call closes 28 October

⏰ Call closes: 28 Oct 2026

The EIC's first defence-only equity call offers €10–30M direct investments to companies with a primary defence purpose in the EU, associated EEA countries and Ukraine, co-investing in larger rounds of roughly €50–150M. Priority areas include air and missile defence, drones and counter-drone, electronic warfare, cyber and AI.

Our take: This is for scale-ups that already have a lead investor lined up. Earlier-stage dual-use teams should use the EIC Accelerator route instead.

EIC Accelerator: last 2026 cut-off on 4 November

⏰ Full proposals due: 4 Nov 2026

4 November 2026 (17:00 Brussels) is the final full-proposal cut-off of the year. Full proposals require an approved Step 1 short proposal, which takes 4 to 6 weeks to evaluate. Dual-use applications are eligible since July 2026.

Our take: Teams with an approved Step 1 should submit now. Everyone else should file Step 1 this month and target the first 2027 cut-offs.
EU Funding

EDIP second call: €80M for unmanned and counter-unmanned systems, due 16 February 2027

⏰ Proposals due: 16 Feb 2027

The European Defence Industry Programme's second calls close on 16 February 2027. They include €80M for unmanned and counter-unmanned systems with Ukrainian partners (up to €10M per project), €122.25M for key electronic components and €152.75M for platforms and end-products.

Our take: The drone topic funds production capacity, not research. Robotics start-ups should team up with a manufacturer that already has an industrial footprint.
EU Funding

EDF 2026 calls draw a record 612 proposals

The European Defence Fund's 2026 calls, worth about €1 billion, received 612 proposals, 49% more than last year. The €60M non-thematic SME calls were especially oversubscribed, and results are expected by March 2027.

Our take: Competition for EDF money is getting tougher. The 2027 round is the last of this EU budget, so consortia that start now will have the edge.
Research

IAC 2026 wraps up in Antalya; ESA prepares a decision on European astronaut transport

At the International Astronautical Congress (5–9 October), ESA said it has a mandate to prepare decisions for its December ministerial meeting in Rome on European autonomy in human and robotic exploration, including whether Europe should build its own astronaut transport. ESA also signed an MoU with Vast on post-ISS cooperation in low Earth orbit.

Our take: A European crew-transport decision would open a new procurement wave for robotics, autonomy and in-orbit services suppliers.

European Robotics Forum 2027: paper deadline extended to 26 October

⏰ Papers due: 26 Oct 2026

ERF 2027 takes place in Birmingham on 2–4 March 2027. The scientific-track deadline has been extended to 26 October 2026, and applications for the Renaud Champion Entrepreneurship Award close on 8 January 2027.

Our take: ERF is where European robotics labs, integrators and EU programme officers meet, and that makes it a good place for spin-off founders to be seen.
Research

CoRL 2026 in Austin (9–12 November)

The Conference on Robot Learning runs 9–11 November with workshops on 12 November. Camera-ready versions of the accepted papers were due on 12 October.

Our take: Robot learning is where foundation models meet hardware. We're tracking European author teams.
Funding Rounds

Universal Quantum raises $100M Series A

The University of Sussex spin-out, which builds trapped-ion quantum chips on a standard 200mm foundry line, raised the largest Series A for a UK-headquartered quantum company. DCVC and Firgun Ventures co-led the round, with EDBI and Nauta Capital participating.

Our take: University deep-tech spin-outs can now raise US-sized Series A rounds in Europe if they show a manufacturing path.
Funding Rounds

HyLight raises €13M for autonomous hydrogen airships

The French start-up's 12-metre autonomous airships inspect power lines, pipelines and railways, and its AI software flags defects. Rubio Impact Ventures, DRW and Teampact Ventures joined existing backers Y Combinator and Ring Capital.

Our take: Critical-infrastructure inspection is a strong dual-use market for autonomous aerial robotics, with civilian revenue from day one.
Funding Rounds

Monopulse raises over €2M for jamming-resistant drones

The Danish-Lithuanian maker of reconnaissance drones for NATO militaries, which keep operating when signals are jammed, raised over €2M from Coinvest Capital, Plug and Play and NGL Ventures. NGL's 68-investor angel syndicate contributed €560,000.

Our take: Seed-stage drone rounds are increasingly syndicated with angels. Electronic warfare resilience is now table stakes for defence drones.
Funding Rounds

Dealroom: European defence start-ups heading for a record $10.5B in 2026

Defence tech start-ups had raised about $7.4B by early October, and Dealroom and Resilience Media forecast $10.5B for the full year, roughly four times 2025. Drones took about $4.7B, and defence's share of European VC rose from 4% to 11.1%.

Our take: The money is concentrated in a few mega-rounds. Early-stage is still where disciplined seed investors can get good entry prices.
Czech

TA ČR SIGMA: EIC Accelerator plug-in call closes 27 October

⏰ Call closes: 27 Oct 2026

The 18th SIGMA call (sub-goal 1) funds Czech small firms and start-ups with deep-tech innovations at TRL 4 or higher that are preparing for the EIC Accelerator. Funded projects produce a feasibility study in English and get TA ČR coaching.

Our take: This is a cheap way for Czech deep-tech teams to get their EIC Accelerator application ready. Apply before the 2027 EIC cut-offs.
Czech

Czech Space Week 2026: 2–8 November in Prague and Brno

⏰ Starts: 2 Nov 2026

CzechInvest, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Planetum Praha run a week of events including Space2Business (3–4 November), LaunchIT: NextGen Space Founders, Space x AI Connect and an ESA BIC Launchpad evening on 5 November.

Our take: This is the best week of the year to meet Czech space founders in one place.
Czech

IP Lab Ventures Fund I: first Czech tech-transfer fund (€50M+)

The EIF commits about €27M from the National Recovery Plan to a pre-seed and seed fund that commercialises university IP in AI, robotics, autonomy, semiconductors and more.

Our take: Czech university spin-offs finally have a dedicated first cheque, which makes co-investment opportunities likely.
